The family in residence at Utkinton Hall during nineteenth century Britain were notoriously pious. Being strict Protestants, they upheld the law of the Sabbath Day which meant no labour or vice. When a group of workmen from out of town were hired to work on the stable, they were found playing cards late one Saturday night. They were warned that it was drawing close to midnight and that they must stop their game before it struck twelve. Because these out of town folk didn't believe in adhering to the rules of the Sabbath, they ignored the warning. When the clock struck twelve, one of the workmen shuffled the deck and dealt another round. At this point, one of the horses in the stable turned its head toward the group and asked if it could play! Terrified, and believing it to be the work of the devil, they turned and fled into the night. They were never seen again.
